You become what you consume

Sunday Sparring

You become what you consume

Your mind will take on the character of your most frequent thoughts: souls are dyed by thoughts.
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 5.16

You are what you eat.

Or, more accurately—you reflect what you consume.

This is true in almost every sense of the phrase:

• Physically

• Spiritually

• Intellectually

• Metaphorically

Fitness experts will proclaim that ‘abs are made in the kitchen’, inferring that without the proper diet and balance of caloric intake, you won’t achieve glorious 6-pack abs.

In short, what you put in is what you’ll get out.

I had such a scarce and tainted view of myself in my early adult life.

“Why do I suck so bad…”

“How do I keep fucking this up”

“Why can’t I get out of my own way”

“Why is everyone else getting ahead”

‘Woe, is me’ mode was well and truly activated.

It was exhausting.

Unsurprisingly, this went thing on for decades. Nothing changed because nothing changed.

My soul was dyed.

The colour: a very dark and unforgiving black.

In the last 4 years I have begun to rectify and repair this damage. I have made it my mission to heal myself, even if it is the only thing I accomplish in this lifetime.

The tools I have used thus far on this mission:

  1. Exercise
  2. Stoicism
  3. Gratitude
  4. Journaling
  5. Medication
  6. Hypnotherapy

My transformation is not yet complete, and maybe it never will be, but it is obvious how far I have come.

I touched on my mindset shift in a conversation last night I had with a friend whilst discussing my recent career change and willingness to work hard and succeed.

“I’m capable of so much more” I said to my friend.

She was impressed by the confidence and strength that I spoke with, and quite frankly so was I.

This person did not exist until very recently.

It reminds me of this quote from Alexis Carrel (who I know nothing about apart from this quote that I am using to make me sound smarter than I am)…

“Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor.”

I was an unskilled sculptor.

I was that untouched piece of marble—now I can stand back and admire my work.

Ahhhh... perfect!

We are living through extremely scary times, in a world that becomes more fearful by the day.

Rather than see what they love, people choose to see what they fear.

Fear of 'other' is as alive as it has ever been.

There is always going to be an enemy for you to find, should you wish to look for an enemy...

The other option of course, stop looking.

I choose what I consume.

I choose how it affects me.

I choose who my enemies are.

I choose who and what I am fearful of.

I choose the version of life that I want to see.

You can see yourself as a beacon of light and hope, someone who was put on the Earth to enact the divine purpose of God's true essence.

Or you can yourself as a helpless minion stuck in the race.

You can look at someone you don't understand and see an enemy or a lens to enrich your worldview.

We all have that choice, we all have that power.

You get in what you put out.

Simple.

Wanna be a hater? Hate.

Wanna be a winner? Win.

Wanna be a victim? You can.

Wanna be an optimist? Believe.

Do it all or do none of it. It matters not because time will pass with or without you. The price you pay for one path over another is not too expensive, just peace in your soul.

If you can afford that, go right ahead.

For me however, I choose to consume the things that I wish to be made out of:

Love

Optimism

Objective

Thinking

Resilience

Sacrifice

That's why my team is called LOOTRS, because that is what we stand for and what we aspire to be—but that's a story for next time.

Anyway gang, thanks as always for reading.

Be careful what you consume and I'll chat to you next week.

With gratitude,

Sav.

Sunday Sparring Are you creating timestamps for your life? One of my all-time favourite sayings. "If not me, then who? If not now, then when?" It is a simple call to arms, a self-reflective commentary on one's duty or willingness to do the work. The saying has been reserved for big moments or moments of crisis. When the chips are stacked against a person or movement, it is a rallying cry to all those listening—responsibility and ownership of the outcome starts now, with us. I used the...

Sunday Sparring The best investment you will ever make (A short guide) "Reverence of your own mind and the value you give to it will make you acceptable to yourself." —Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 6.16 Self-love is the most important investment we will ever make in our lives. I truly believe that. Seriously is there anything more valuable? The peace and sanctity that comes from a mind free of chaos and doubt—that is heaven on Earth. Consider the opposite for a second... Jealous Indulgent...

Sunday Sparring I love my little life I was walking around my apartment the other day on one of the few days I have had off—simply observing. I stood to take it all in. Looking out into my courtyard that sits on the perimeter of our apartment block's centre square. Admiring my home office setup and envisioning the hard work that is still to be done. Running my eyes over my podcasting space and imagining all that it can be. Soaking up the quaint minimalist space I call home when I got the urge...
